Why was the US considered a hegemon during the postwar Bretton Woods system?

Because most other countries emerged from WWII with their economies wrecked, while the United States managed to come out of it with a rather strong economy. I assume you already know what Bretton Woods was, so I don't need to explain what it is, but as the U.S. held more investment capital than anyone else, they stood to gain the most from the system -- and they did, becoming a global superpower or hegemon.
