Which bit for western pleasure?

Here are some I found:

I'm a little confused because you have such a wide range of choices.

Which bit to use really depends on your horse, how far along it is in its training, and what each horse prefers.

First off, I'm not sure the Mike beers bit (3rd one down) would be legal for western pleasure, check the rules of your show association before you buy that one.

Second, I absolutely would not use the tom thumb bit, (4th one down) because they have a very harsh nut cracker effect, and do not have the feel you need for western pleasure..

If your horse is just starting out in a curb bit, or just starting to be shown western pleasure, I would recommend something like this

It has shortish shanks, a comfort snaffle mouth piece (which is different from the snaffle-like mouthpiece of a tom thumb), and independent side action. It is mild enough not to scare a horse that is not use to the chin and poll pressure of a curb, and you can use each side independently on the corners of the mouth as needed while you transition your horse to a curb bit.

if you horse is a little farther a long, you can go to something with a port, and a little longer shanks.

I am a big fan of myler bits, horses just seem to LOVE them. I like to keep horses in bits with independent side action until they are completely finished.

If do have a finished horse, the california pleasure bit is really popular.

One of the biggest problems with choosing a bit for you horse is that there are so many choices, and horses are all different in what they like best and respond best to and good bits are expensive. If you have a trainer/instructor/friend who has a lot of different bits that you could try on your horse to see what works best that helps a lot.
