**Federer avoids an early exit, Nadal Coasts**

MADRID -- **Roger Federer** rallied to beat **Milos Raonic** 4-6, 7-5, 7-6
(7-4) at the Madrid Open on Wednesday to narrowly avoid his earliest
tournament exit in two years.

Federer, who hasn't been eliminated in the second round since the 2010 Rome
Masters, survived the scare using his serve against the 23rd-ranked Canadian.

"These are some of the fastest courts on tour; I expected that a few shots
would decide the match," Federer said.

**Rafael Nadal **won his first match on the blue clay he has criticized as
soft and slippery, defeating **Nikolay Davydenko** 6-2, 6-2.

"I played much better than I expect," Nadal said. "The (blue) court … doesn't
make you feel comfortable. It's difficult, hard to attack and come back to
defend."

Meanwhile,** Marin Cilic** ousted Tampa resident **John Isner **7-6 (7-4), 7-6
(7-3).

On the women's side, defending champ **Petra Kvitova** lost to **Lucie
Hradecka** 6-4, 6-3 and top-seeded **Victoria Azarenka** beat **Ana Ivanovic**
6-4, 6-4. Tampa resident **Sam Stosur** was among those to reach the quarters.
