Hawaiian volcano science: why Kilauea sits on Mauna Loa, but is really a sister of Mauna Kea (RaisingIslands?format=xml)
A set of important new papers on Hawaiian volcanoes reveal several
intriguing geology questions, including why the hawaiian islands haven't created inside a
single line.
Study from the chemical composition of lavas indicates that you will find two
parallel lines of Island volcanics, which scientists call the Loa trend and
the Kea trend. They obtain names using their greatest mountain tops, Mauna Loa
being of 1 line and Mauna Kea another.

chemistry of lavas. Here, the robot arm around the JASON2 submarine, operating
10,000 ft below ocean level, collects a lava sample from Mauna Loa. Credit:

One paper in June within the journal Character Geoscience, was compiled by Maxim
Ballmer and Garrett Ito from the College of Hawai`i School of Sea and Earth
Sciences and Technology, Jeroen van Hunen of Durham College within the United kingdom and
Paul Tackley from the Swiss Institute of Geophysics in Zurich. It's titled,
“Spatial and temporal variability in Hawaiian hotspot volcanism inducted by
small-scale convection.”
Another paper, released in Character Geoscience in November, is as simple as Dominique
Weis, Mark Jellinek and James Scoates from the ...
